Theo Walcott’s absence is less important to Arsenal than the need for a new striker – like Dimitar Berbatov.

Heavily outnumbered by artistic midfielders, the Arsenal strikers’ union must be tempted to call an emergency meeting – in a phone box. But the idea that Theo Walcott’s season-ending injury will swing the Premier League title race away from Arsenal is borne of needless panic.
Dimitar Berbatov now looks a wonderfully cheap solution to Arsenal’s manpower shortage at centreforward. If Arsène Wenger was dismissive of Berbatov as a potential January signing before the weekend, Walcott’s accident in the FA Cup win over Spurs must have prompted the Arsenal’ manager to take another look at Fulham’s languid and restless maestro.
Eight years ago this month, Walcott moved from Southampton to Arsenal for an initial £5 million. Supporters are now urging Wenger to spend 10 times that amount to fill the breach left by injuries to Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner (who is out for a month) as well as the various ailments of Olivier Giroud, who, along with Aaron Ramsey, leads the club’s league goalscoring chart with eight.
Walcott was Arsenal’s most prolific scorer in the league last season with 14. Next up were Santi Cazorla with 12 and Giroud and Lukas Podolski with 11. At the start of this campaign the Gunners already knew they were low on strikers so Wenger placed his faith instead in stockpiling attacking midfielders. The competition for front-four places at Arsenal is now intense, with Mesut Özil, Cazorla, Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky and Serge Gnabry all able to torment opponents with fluid passing or darting runs.
In this mix Walcott had been working his way in from outside right to serve as a central striker. Among the cruellest aspects of his mishap in the FA Cup is that the Tottenham game offered him his chance to shine in the No 9 position, as a lone centre-forward, where he performed well without providing convincing evidence that he is a natural penalty box predator.
Walcott prefers to make runs from deeper positions and arrow past defenders, in contrast to Giroud, who fills a more advanced and opportunistic role. But a comforting fact for Arsenal is that they are well-endowed with fast, hole-punching players who can fill much of the void left by Walcott. Gnabry, in particular, is described by Wenger as a “very intelligent player” because his mind goes cool, not hot, in the final third.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been out since August, is another candidate, with the obvious proviso that long-term injuries rarely return players to the field of play in optimum condition.
One of Walcott’s biggest career challenges has been to calm his thinking and make better use of the ball when he has opened up defences. At 24, he looked to be developing that greater awareness, so there is no questioning the scale of the loss to Arsenal as they chase their first league title since 2004.
In a compelling race there has been a gap between those sides who are blessed with two or three top-grade strikers and those who have left themselves short: mainly Arsenal and Chelsea, who have scored 39 and 38 league goals respectively, compared to 57 for Manchester City and 46 for Liverpool.
Strategic failures are responsible for Chelsea’s reliance on Fernando Torres, who is hardly lethal nowadays. Arsenal must also own up to failings in last summer’s market. Wenger’s butterfly collecting in midfield cannot obscure his doomed attempt to buy an accomplice for Giroud. Gonzalo Higuaín and Luis Suárez were pursued and an eye was kept on Wayne Rooney. Thwarted in all directions, Wenger splashed instead on Özil, who smashed the club transfer record at £42 million.
Since then Arsenal have done a fine job of covering up the weakness at the very tip of the team. Ramsey’s eight league goals have lifted him into the front rank of attacking midfielders (from a much deeper starting position) but now he must sustain that progress through the second half of a campaign. Giroud also needs his second wind while more consistency would be welcome from Özil.
Walcott has 45 in 128 league appearances at Arsenal: a highly respectable return for a ‘winger’. He has scored five in as many league appearances, with two against Manchester City (in a 6-3 defeat) and West Ham and another against Cardiff on New Year’s Day.
Prior to that sweet Christmas run he had been out from Sept 18 until Nov 23 following surgery for an abdominal problem. Those who see him as a talisman whose absence will wreck Arsenal’s title challenge reckon without his susceptibility to injury and general unluckiness.
Cazorla, Giroud and Podolski cost £39 million between them and Özil was £42 million, so Arsenal have not been parsimonious. What they lack is a world-class striker of the sort Liverpool can point to in Suárez and City undoubtedly possess in Sergio Agüero. The France Under-21 forward Yaya Sanogo could step up soon but he will not win the Premier League by himself.
Arsenal have countless players to do the running and passing. In the short-term – until the summer market opens – they need someone to be on the end of all those sweeping moves and anticipate the angles, which is why you could imagine Berbatov hunting around the edge of the box like a slightly arrogant aristocrat waiting to be served by his staff. It requires no leap of the imagination to see him as a finisher in a team of good providers.

Бербатов уже не торт, вот Джексон Мартинес из Порту — этот парень эдакий «пластичный киллер штрафной», с удовольствием перейдет в Арсенал, сам об этом говорил в интервью. Выкупной кластер 40 млн. евро, вопрос только в желании Арсенала. Играет здорово головой, есть скорость, техника, возраст 27 лет самый сок. Для меня был бы супер трансфер. Из минусов — нельзя до заявить в ЛЧ.

Все по делу написано. Краткий перевод — в Арсенале избыток атакующих полузащитников и острая нехватка нападающих. Из чего следует, что потеря Уолкотта может не сильно повлиять на шансы команды, если удастся купить страйкера. И Бербатов самый простой вариант, хоть Венгер и говорил обратное неделю назад.
Да из топ-форвардов, которых можно купить и главное которых могут Арсеналу продать остается только Мартинес, но тут есть один момент — он не стоит ни 40, ни даже 30 млн. евро. Косту не продадут, Руни- маловероятно, Балотелли — стремно, Суареса — нереально. Реми выдает офигенный сезон, но как долго его такая игра продлится, ведь во Франции у него статистика хуже чем у Жиру, а стоит он сейчас будь здоров. Поэтому, полагаю, остается для глубины скамьи до конца сезона перехватить кого-нить и Бербатов выглядит на эту роль очень неплохо.
А сколько стоит Мартинес?
Во-первых, никто не говорит, что Мартинес стоит 40млн. Вы абсолютно правы с точки зрения бизнеса, но с футбольной точки зрения следует задаваться вопросами: «Достаточно ли усилит команду Мартинес для борьбы за чемпионство?» и «Можно ли усилить команду на 1-го условного Мартинеса, заплатив менее 40-ка миллионов?» Я вижу ситуацию следующим образом: если Венгер купит условного Бербатова (15- млн) — он не верит в чемпионство Арсенала и думает как обезопасить себя (вроде и купил кого-то, но и не потратился при этом, а в ЛЧ и так должны попадать), а если условного Мартинеса (30+ млн) — решил бороться по-серьезному (за 70+ млн. фунтов на трансферы отвечать придется даже Венгеру).
полагаю, что резервист Фалькао в сборной со статистикой 25/8 и без опыта игры в АПЛ стоит никак не более Негредо (25), а можно купить то что блестит, а потом второго Сольдадо за 30-40 получить.
Эта цена неправильных действий летом. Когда тебе под зарез нужно, бывает приходится платить и в два раза завышенную цену.
Может глупая аналогия, но если собираешься купить водку к юбилею и пожалеешь деньги на лишние пару бутылок Grey Goose, полагая что твоих пять хватит, потом когда нормальные магазины закрыты на ночь будешь согласен платить в два раза дороже за бутылку самогона, когда у тебя все закончилось, а народ требует продолжение банкета. )))

Ну а потом уже как-то литературно встроить то, что травма закончила сезон Тео.
